Schliemann later moved to Mycenae, where he claimed to have "gazed upon the face of Agamemnon" after finding a stunning gold death mask in a shaft grave. Although modern carbon dating has proved these artifacts are hundreds of years older than the traditional dates of the Trojan War, Schliemann’s work forced the academic world to reckon with the possibility that these myths were rooted in a tangible, if distorted, Bronze Age reality. Bureaucrats versus warriors in the Linear B era Following Schliemann's era, the pendulum of scholarship swung toward a more sober, bureaucratic interpretation of the past. The cracking of the Linear B script revealed a world of Mycenaean tablets that recorded the mundane details of palace life: tax records, lists of weavers, and inventories of pottery. For decades, archaeologists used this evidence to argue that the Mycenaeans were not homeric warriors but rather uninspired clerks and farmers. However, as the ancient sources suggest, these women already possessed a terrifying amount of agency. Whether through the "necromantic power" of Helen’s sexuality or the calculated steel of Clytemnestra’s vengeance, they were figures who stood midway between the human and the divine. They remind us that history is not just a collection of tax records and ruins, but a narrative of the passions that drive civilizations to both their highest achievements and their most spectacular collapses.
