Hookup culture is a social phenomenon that has gained prominence, particularly among Western late adolescents and college students, since around 2000. It promotes casual sexual encounters, including one-night stands, without the expectation of emotional intimacy, bonding, or committed relationships. The definition of "hooking up" is ambiguous, ranging from kissing to sexual intercourse. While often associated with young adults, casual sex is not limited to this demographic.
This cultural shift stems from evolving social norms, increased mobility, and advancements in science and technology. Some studies suggest that only a minority of college students regularly participate in hookup culture, with many overestimating their peers' involvement. Despite its perception as sexually liberating, research indicates that hookup culture can lead to negative mental and emotional consequences, including regret, diminished self-esteem, and difficulties in forming lasting relationships. Concerns have also been raised about the link between hookup culture and increased instances of unwanted sex and the spread of STIs.
