Crucible Industries LLC (Former Specialty Steel Manufacturer)
Crucible Industries, originally known as the Crucible Steel Company of America, was formed in 1900 through the merger of thirteen crucible-steel companies. With roots tracing back to 1776 with the Sanderson Brothers, Crucible established itself as a specialty steel manufacturer. The company was known for its Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) steels, producing high-speed, stainless, and tool steels for various industries, including automotive, cutlery, aerospace, and machine tools. Over its history, Crucible secured over 1,000 patents and was known for innovation in steel production.
Based in Solvay, New York, Crucible Industries faced financial difficulties and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2024. In early 2025, the company ceased production at its Syracuse plant. Erasteel, a French steelmaker, acquired key assets, including equipment, trademarks, and patents, to continue producing CPM steels. Meanwhile, Lauter Metal Technologies purchased the Syracuse site with plans to revive steel production. The last known president of Crucible was John Shiesley.
