The Tennessee Department of Revenue (TDOR) is an agency within the Tennessee state government responsible for administering the state's tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws. It acts as the state’s chief tax collector, collecting approximately 92% of total state tax revenue. The Department's collections enable funding for essential public services such as education, infrastructure, and healthcare. More than 800 people work for the Department of Revenue.
The TDOR's origins trace back to 1923 when three separate tax-collecting agencies were combined into the Department of Finance and Taxation. The agency was renamed the Department of Revenue in 1959. The current Commissioner of Revenue is David Gerregano, who was initially appointed in December 2016 and reappointed in January 2019. Key responsibilities of the department include processing tax returns and payments, updating taxpayer accounts, and ensuring the department's tax system meets business and IT needs.
