RED Digital Cinema is an American camera manufacturer specializing in digital cinematography, headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California. Founded in 2005 by Jim Jannard, also the founder of Oakley, the company aimed to deliver relatively affordable 4K digital cinema cameras. RED's cameras are known for their high-resolution sensors, modular designs, and proprietary REDCODE RAW recording. The first production camera, the RED One, debuted in 2007. RED's innovations significantly contributed to the shift from analog film to digital in the movie-making industry.
In March 2024, Nikon Corporation acquired RED Digital Cinema. Keiji Oishi, from Nikon's Imaging Business Unit, became the CEO, with Tommy Rios, the executive vice president of RED, as co-CEO. Jarred Land, former president, and Jim Jannard remain as advisors to the company. RED cameras have been used in numerous acclaimed movies and TV shows, including "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", "The Queen's Gambit," and "Squid Game". Recent products include the V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X cameras, featuring global shutter sensors and advanced imaging technology. RED actively engages with the industry, participating in events like IBC and Cine Gear Expo.
