"Fifty Shades of Grey" is an erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James. Originally self-published as an e-book and print-on-demand in June 2011, its publishing rights were acquired by Vintage Books in March 2012. The book follows the deepening relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and young business magnate Christian Grey. It contains explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of BDSM.
The novel has 514 pages. It became the first installment in the "Fifty Shades" novel series, which has sold over 150 million copies worldwide by October 2017 and has been translated into 52 languages. A film adaptation, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, was released in 2015, with sequels following in 2017 and 2018. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $570 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. Despite its commercial success, "Fifty Shades of Grey" has received largely negative critical reception. In 2016, the film adaptation "won" five Razzies, including Worst Picture.
