The clitoris is a complex female sex organ responsible for sexual pleasure. Located at the top of the vulva, above the urethra, it is the most sensitive erogenous zone in the female body. The clitoris is composed of both external and internal parts. The visible part, called the glans, is a small nub of flesh typically about the size of a pea. The glans has an estimated 10,000 or more nerve endings, making it highly sensitive to touch. The glans is covered by a hood of skin called the prepuce.
Most of the clitoris is internal, resembling an upside-down wishbone in shape. Internally, it consists of the body (or shaft), which connects to the glans, and the crura, which are two "legs" that extend from the body and wrap around the vagina and urethra. The clitoris has erectile tissue, similar to the penis, which becomes engorged with blood during sexual arousal, leading to a clitoral erection. The clitoris varies in size and sensitivity from person to person, and its only known function is to provide sexual pleasure.
