Nico Leonard warns Audemars Piguet is collapsing as Rolex keeps the crown
The S-Tier gold standard

Rolex remains the undisputed king of the horological world, not necessarily for its movements, but for its unparalleled marketing mastery. It has successfully shifted the luxury focus from the physical product to the entire acquisition process. The industry relies on this stability; without the cultural gravity of the crown, the secondary and primary markets would lose their foundational support. In the S-tier, it isn't about being a watchmaker—it's about being an institution.
Audemars Piguet faces a systemic collapse
Audemars Piguet is currently "cooked," following the departure of Francois-Henry Bennahmias. While the Royal Oak historically saved the Swiss industry and remains an S-tier icon, the brand's current trajectory is concerning. The reliance on viral, mainstream collaborations like the Travis Scott edition has created a bubble of fake hype that is now deflating. When a brand loses its leadership and fails to innovate beyond past glories, it risks a total market correction.
High-value entry points and cult favorites
Wealth management often overlooks the "value for money" segment, yet Casio and Tissot command respect even among elite collectors. The F91W represents peak functional utility—a watch worn by everyone from world leaders to average consumers. Similarly, the PRX provides significant aesthetic value without the capital-intensive entry price of Patek Philippe. These brands prove that financial prudence and horological interest can coexist.
The service trap and technical pitfalls
Expensive doesn't always mean reliable. A. Lange & Söhne produces some of the world's most beautiful chronographs, such as the Datograph, yet they suffer from atrocious service standards. Investors must consider the total cost of ownership, including the frustration of a brand that fails to support its clientele. Meanwhile, brands like Hublot and Jacob & Co fall into the F-tier due to a lack of substance behind their aggressive pricing and loud designs.
