ASUS builds 1.1 megawatt test bench for Nvidia's power-hungry Vera Rubin
Scaling the test bench for 100,000-watt racks
Traditional desktop testing relies on simple benches to swap components. However, ASUS has scaled this concept into a miniature data center specifically designed for enterprise AI hardware. Validating a single server rack now involves managing nearly two tons of hardware and power draws exceeding 100,000 watts. This R&D environment provides the controlled infrastructure necessary to compare Nvidia architectures against previous generations under extreme stress.
Under the hood of the liquid-cooled GB300

The GB300 compute node represents a massive shift in power density. Each node houses two Nvidia Bianca boards, each featuring a 72-core ARM Grace CPU and two Blackwell Ultra GPUs. With each GPU pulling 1,400 watts, ASUS utilizes a 54V architecture to maintain efficiency and manageable wire gauges. Liquid cooling is no longer optional; it is a structural requirement. The nodes feature parallel cooling loops for GPUs and integrated leak sensors that trigger immediate shutdowns via management software if moisture bridges the flexible PCBs.
Torture testing in the 1.3 megawatt thermal lab
Validation requires more than just functional boots. ASUS employs massive environmental chambers to simulate global deployment risks. These chambers subject systems like the GB200 to temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C. For AI inference, data movement is as critical as raw compute. Consequently, engineers monitor 24/7 for latency anomalies and transfer errors between the GPU, network, and storage. To keep the 1.3 megawatt chiller efficient, ASUS targets 20°C water for testing, a strategic move that saves $20,000 annually in energy costs compared to standard 7°C data center water.
Preparing for the Vera Rubin transition
The roadmap for AI hardware shows no signs of cooling down. The upcoming Vera Rubin architecture is already driving facility upgrades. ASUS indicates these next-gen racks will be heavier and more power-hungry than the current GB300 stacks. As the responsibility for rack design and thermal management falls solely on the manufacturer, these R&D labs serve as the final gatekeepers for reliability before mass production begins.
