The Crushing Weight of 400 Visual Effects Shots

Filmmaking is often a battle between creative vision and technical exhaustion. For the team at Corridor Digital, preparing the third season of their tabletop gaming series Son of a Dungeon meant facing an enormous challenge: over 400 visual effects shots. Traditional virtual production pipelines, while powerful, often crush the joy of spontaneous filmmaking under a mountain of heavy gear, unstable tracking connections, and tedious lighting setups.

Moving Past the Physical Gear Trap

Traditional virtual production setups require physical infrastructure that limits movement. Sam Gorski set out to eliminate three major production bottlenecks: physical light setups, green screen keying struggles, and complex tracking rigs like the HTC Vive Mars.

Instead of spending over 33 hours adjusting physical light stands to match virtual scenes, the team integrated SwitchLight, an AI tool developed by Beeble. Trained using a custom spherical light stage, this system converts flat 2D footage into physically based rendering (PBR) maps. This process allows filmmakers to relight actors digitally in post-production, matching the virtual environment perfectly.

Bypassing After Effects to Render in Real Time

Camera tracking also received a drastic upgrade. Instead of complex, hardware-heavy tracking rigs that frequently drop signal, Gorski utilized Jetset. This system harnesses the internal gyro and LiDAR sensors of an iPhone to track camera movement and map actor depth instantly, removing the need for physical tracking markers.

To make these disparate technologies talk to each other, Corridor Digital co-developed a custom Unreal Engine plugin alongside software developer Patrick Stollenaul from District Cinema. The custom plugin allows the raw video to sit directly inside the 3D space, removing the traditional, tedious compositing step.

A Fast, Unified Cinematic Pipeline

The results speak directly to efficiency. A test shot that previously required 45 minutes of manual tracking, keying, and compositing in Adobe After Effects took only 12 minutes to output. This new pipeline drastically reduces iteration times, proving that indie creators can build high-fidelity virtual worlds without Hollywood-sized budgets.
