We are currently living through a major contradiction in computing history. We have built models capable of human-level reasoning, yet we interact with them through a single text box and a submit button. This setup forces us to pre-package our thoughts, wait for a response, and then manually adjust the output. It is the exact same interaction pattern used by mainframe operators decades ago.
The Three Pillars of Interaction
To understand why modern software feels so unnatural, Ted Johnson, co-founder of JoinIn AI, breaks down human-computer interfaces into three core layers:
- The Channel: The physical medium carrying your intent. Keyboards, screens, and microphones are all channels. We inherited the standard QWERTY keyboard from 1860s typewriter constraints, and we still place it between ourselves and superintelligence.
- Expression: The range and richness of meaning a channel can carry. While assembly language limited developers to a few dozen opcodes, natural language allows us to express complete, nuanced human thoughts.
- Protocol: The rules and shape of the actual exchange. This is where the system breaks down.
While expression has exploded, our interface protocols remain completely flat.

Why Shorter Batch Is Still Batch
Prompting is not a new paradigm. It is simply batch processing with interactive sprinkles. The punch card protocol required users to encode their entire request, hand it to an operator, and wait. Prompting demands the exact same sequence: compile your context, write instructions, hit submit, and wait.
We have rebranded this administrative work as "prompt engineering" and treated it like a highly skilled discipline. In reality, telling a model to "think step-by-step" or to "act as an expert" is the modern equivalent of sorting a deck of physical punch cards. It is an arbitrary tax we pay because the interface cannot handle the messy, iterative reality of human thought.
The Shift From Chat to Active Participation
To move forward, software must stop acting like a passive receiver and start actively participating. This requires real-time conversational features, such as those demonstrated by NVIDIA with its Persona Plex research model. Instead of waiting for a turn to complete, a participating interface can yield to interruptions, process background noises, and track multiple speakers without explicit wake words.
True participation means the machine takes on the cognitive burden. It should handle the timing, recognize ambiguity, ask clarifying questions mid-thought, and pull up relevant data without a human having to type a precise query.
Designing for Human Fluency
AI is ultimately an interface technology, not just an intelligence technology. For three-quarters of a century, humans have bent their habits to accommodate the machine's strict limitations. We learned syntax, forms, and precise formatting rules. Now that we have models that can infer and adapt, the interface must meet us where we are. True progress means removing the translation tax and making computers fluent in human interaction.
